While cataract surgery is among the safest and effective procedures in the medical field, new innovations in technology have allowed this surgery to advance even further. The team of highly qualified ophthalmologists at Westchester Eye Associates is excited to offer the latest technology in laser-assisted cataract surgery, the LenSx® Femtosecond Laser system.

The LenSx laser provides the highest level of accuracy available today for cataract surgery. This bladeless, computer-controlled laser offers a higher level of customization and individualized precision compared to more traditional cataract surgery methods.

How Does Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery Work?

A sophisticated imaging system known as optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used to carefully and precisely map out and measure the eye in high-resolution images. The surgeon then uses that map to carefully plan out and customize the surgery to the patient's eye. The femotsecond laser guides the surgeon as it applies laser energy in very short spurts (one trillionth of a second) to make micro-incisions in the eye to access the cataract and correct astigmatism. The laser power then breaks up the cataract and removes the cloudy lens, while also creating an opening in the lens capsule, allowing for very precise placement of the intraocular lens.

What Are The Benefits Of LenSx Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery?

While traditional cataract surgery is extremely safe and effective when performed by a skilled surgeon, laser-assisted cataract surgery offers an advanced level of precision and control. The incisions made in the eye tend to heal quicker when made by the laser. Since a low amount of energy is used, the surgery is gentler overall, and requires fewer instruments in the eye compared to manual surgery. To follow are some of the ways in which patients can benefit from laser-assisted cataract surgery.

  • Greater precision
  • Customized procedure
  • Reduced procedure time
  • Fewer instruments needed
  • Enhanced safety
  • Corrects astigmatism (if needed)
