The Benefits of Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
Cosmetic eyelid surgery refreshes a person's appearance by rejuvenating eyes that appear tired, angry, puffy or sagging as a result of the aging process. Cosmetic procedures performed on the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal system are known as oculoplastic surgery. Surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist who is specially trained in plastic and reconstructive procedures for the eyes, known as an oculoplastic surgeon.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery or an eyelid lift, is one of the most popular oculoplastic surgery procedures. Eyelid surgery refreshes the appearance of puffy or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat and skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids. In some cases, the eyelid muscles and tissue may be tightened as well. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis in our state-of-the-art surgery center.
Blepharoplasty is ideal for correcting undereye "bags", sagging lower eyelids, puffy fat deposits on the eyelids, and fine wrinkles. In addition to cosmetic issues, the procedure can also improve a patient's peripheral vision by lifting droopy eyelids.
If the upper eyelid is being treated, an incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid. For the lower eyelid, an incision is usually made just below the lash line, to minimize visible scarring. If skin removal is not required, the surgeon may opt to perform a transconjunctival incision, which is made on the inside of the lower eyelid. There is no visible scar involved with this type of incision.
Here is a list of what eyelid surgery patients can expect during recovery:
- Stitches are removed five days following surgery
- Most patients return to work in a week
- Contact lenses should not be worn for two weeks after the procedure
- Bruising and swelling are normal and usually last seven to 10 days
Patients who undergo cosmetic eyelid surgery at the hands of a qualified, experienced oculoplastic surgeon achieve a fresh, more youthful appearance as well as better vision, with a short amount of down time.
